Hi. It's been a while. How's the new year for you all so far? I started out my year reflecting on the things I want to achieve this year. In order to do that, I took a step back from all social media and just spend some quality time alone reflecting on the things that would help me grow. Hence if you notice social media, I've actually went almost a week without facebook. I did say almost, it's 5 days in exact. I still can't believe that I went 2 weeks without instagram and a month without snapchat.
'Have you ever go through a phase where you just don't feel like talking to anyone for a few days and it's not because you're mad or anything but you just don't feel like talking?'
So that happened to me, but more for social media. I guess in some sense I just needed a detox from social media so I started on the 4th of January for Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram. Needless to say it took 5 days later for me to get back on Facebook. I couldn't stand not knowing what my friend tag me in and I just had to check it. Also I had to reply a few people.
At least until now, I'm still not on instagram. TBH having this social media cleansing was surprisingly nice. Sometimes Facebook can be bombarded with so much negativity from ranty statuses that just don't help encourage you for the day. Don't get me wrong, I know everyone has their rights to rant and it's perfectly fine. But you can choose spend your day with social media or to fill it up with more meaningful/encouraging things.
As for instagram, not being on it made me happy that I didn't feel the need to worry on what picture I should post today or how should I edit the picture or what to caption or when to upload it. I bet I sound shallow to most of you but in 2015, social media was my job. It was my source of income. It still is.
But you know what? After taking this social media cleansing on various apps, it felt refreshing. I spent more time with my family and I did some thinking. I just took a step back and just enjoyed life. At random moments of the day I did occasionally reached for my phone and aimed for my social media apps a few times but once I did that, it just made me realise how addicted I was on social media.
Am really glad I did this 'cleansing'. It showed me how I could be happy and a bit more productive without social media around. Shall learn to cut down being online a little more this year. Not sure how long it would last but at least I would be able to get work done.
Since it's still the beginning of the year and you're trying to organise yourself to fit well in 2016, why not have one entire day away from social media. It was a challenged but you would find yourself having a lot of extra time on your hand.
